Kirk Robinson was a devoted husband, phenomenal father, and industry leader in construction management. He lived life with happiness, positivity, curiosity, and strength. Before his life ended on September 18th, 2019, Kirk, my beloved Dad, left behind a legacy that will be remembered by our family and the community as a whole.
Part of that legacy was his commitment to running marathons. Kirk completed 8 full and numerous half marathons, all while over the age of 40. His races included Washington D.C., San Antonio, Big Sur, New York City, and Seattle. The funny part about my Dad’s running career was his motivation was less about a love for running and much more about his desire and fervor to challenge himself and feel accomplished.
My Dad struggled with heart disease from the summer of 2018 to the fall of 2019. Beginning with a sudden heart attack, Kirk got extensive medical care and management from the Swedish Medical Center Heart and Vascular Institute, located in his hometown for over 35 years, Seattle. The staff saved his life that day, improved his heart function with stents and medications, and gave him tools to help strengthen his overall health and lifestyle. September of 2019, my Dad was emergently rushed to the Cardiac ICU at Swedish once again, where the expert medical team worked tirelessly to save his life. Though unsuccessful, the care provided to him was exemplary, and ultimately gave us more time with him at the end of his life. The high-quality skill level, respect, compassion, and humanity shown by the Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute will always be remembered.
I began a running career of my own a few years ago. My Dad was my number one supporter, who gave me motivation, helped me train, and came to the sidelines to cheer me on. He was able to see me complete my first full marathon May of 2019 in Vancouver, BC, a memory now cherished even more than before.
I, Sarah Gadzuk, will be running the San Diego Rock n' Roll Marathon on June 6th, 2021, in honor of my Dad, Kirk Robinson. My original goal was 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans. Though I was delayed, life since my Father's death has taught me to adapt and focus on the positive things I can control. I am continuing to raise money for the incredible Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute, the care group I am forever indebted to. Please support my running efforts and donate. By doing so you will not only help other patients with complex cardiac needs, but will help the legacy of my Dad live on.
